A Guy's Beginner Guide To Facials
While spa services, such as facials, have stereotypically been seen as a service for women, the New York Post says that more and more men are enjoying these services these days. If you're a guy who has never had a facial before and wants to try one out, here are some tips to keep in mind.
Wait to Shave
Although a facial is relaxing, certain ingredients and treatments—like a chemical peel—are meant to deeply exfoliate your skin. If you shave before a facial, then your skin will be very sensitive. If you tend to get razor burn, the lotions could irritate this condition further. If you do need to shave the same day, try to do it about eight hours before your appointment.
Ask about Specific Treatments for Men
There isn't a one-size-fits-all facial package when it comes to facials, so be sure to do your homework. Keep in mind that men have thicker skin due to androgen (testosterone) stimulation, so a deeper facial that is designed for your skin will be more effective than a facial package your girlfriend would get.
Start with Mild Ingredients
If you already have a good skincare regimen in place, write down which ingredients have been beneficial and which ones have irritated your skin. Every spa is different, so this list can greatly help the estheticians. If you are unsure if you are allergic to something but know you have sensitive skin, tell the spa beforehand. They can use milder products to be on the safe side.
If you are worried about sensitivity, you could opt out deep exfoliation or extractions (similar to what you'd find at a dermatologist). Instead, the esthetician can focus more on the massage aspect. Many facials involve massage therapy since it helps lymphatic drainage and blood circulation. Not only is this relaxing, but it can reduce puffiness in the face.
Give Your Skin a Breather Afterwards
After your facial, you may physically feel rejuvenated, but your skin may be red right after. It's important to not scrub or wash your face until the next morning so that your skin can heal. If you are doing a deeper facial, like a chemical peel, it's important to stay out of the sun. Make sure you are staying hydrated since this will flush out metabolic waste and help your skin heal quicker.
